Colonization is the process of inhabiting a celestial body. It is usually done after terraforming has been successful in creating a human-habitable planet.
Background[]
As living on Earth becomes increasingly more difficult due to pollution, global warming, and continuously growing population, colonization becomes a viable option to ensure sustained human life. Several attempts of terraforming have been done, and eventually proven to be successful. Mars was the first body to be colonized, followed by Moon, Galilean moons, Venus, and Titan.
Further advancements have been done that humans are able to travel through extrasolar objects, with faster than light travels become increasingly more available to the general public. This has made exoplanet colonization possible.
Criteria for colonization[]
A body is considered habitable if it meets the following criteria:
- The body's physical, orbital, and atmosphere characteristics must be acceptable for human survival,
- It must not be tidally locked,
- Lifeless planets are preferred to nullify deaths by life-threatening creatures, but inhabited planets are acceptable under certain circumstances.
If it fails to meet the criteria, terraforming must be done first until it's considered habitable. In case of planets too distant from the star, artificial lighting and heating is required. Tidally locked planets and planets with extremely long solar day are normally ignored due to its inability to properly sustain life.
