Swords and Sandals 3 - Two save files of characters

The save file in SS3 is called char_anim_sync.lib, located in the dl_assets\assets\anims folder of the game directory. The only known published hacked video involving this file is this. However, the uploader didn't disclose how they hacked it.

The file is actually in an SQLite database format, so you can edit it with a tool such as DB Browser for SQLite .

The save file format[]

The data is broken down into multiple segments for each characters. If you have one character then you'll only have one row, if you have two then you'll have two rows, and so on.

gladiator_id[]

This is the ID of the character. Doesn't serve any functions whatsoever other than to sort the character creation order.

user_id[]

Unknown. Always set to 123. Might be a leftover from the online version of the game.

name[]

The character's name. Using symbols doesn't seem to cause any problems despite the game restricting it and this is the only way to use symbols.

wins[]

How many times the character wins.

losses[]

How many times the character loses. Set to 0 to reset it.

taunt_quote[]

What the character says when a match starts. Using symbols doesn't seem to cause any problems despite the game restricting it and this is the only way to use symbols other than exclamation mark.

victory_quote[]

What the character says when they win a match. Using symbols doesn't seem to cause any problems and this is the only way to use symbols other than exclamation mark (like Battlemaiden Anna having a question mark on part of the victory quote).

Oddly enough, the Immovable survival skill (the 7th value in survival_tree) is above Robust Constitution (the 8th value in survival_tree). It's possible that in the beta, the developers intended Immovable to be unlocked first, then Robust Constitution, but was swapped later during development.

9th value Determines the eyes type of the character. Uses the same value as the 10th and 11th value, but can use any values ranging from 1-11 (see 11th value below for values explanation), which makes the character having eyes that aren't intended for that variant.
10th value Determines the mouth type of the character. Uses the same value as the 9th and 11th value, but can use any values ranging from 1-11 (see 11th value below for explanation), which makes the character having a mouth that isn't intended for that variant.
11th value

Determines the body type of the character. Setting this to 7 allows you to use the Automaton body type.

To turn your character into an Automaton, just change the 9th, 10th, and 11th value to 7 (becomes 7_7_7).

attribs_tree[]

Contains data for character's base stats.

achievements_tree[]

gold[]

The amount of gold the character has. Uses the same value as the 5th value of the stats_tree.

max_items[]

The maximum amount of items you can have in your inventory. Always set to 30 (12 player-equipped slots + 18 backpack slots). Lower values will decrease the amount of items you can store on your backpack, while higher values will increase it, but this may damage your save file (see the "Advanced modifications" section below).

spells_tree[]

The spells you have on your spellbook. Duplicate spells are allowed, but they won't be able to be used when one is already picked up. Max up to 40 slots (in-game). 1-53. The first value is always zero. Sorted by the order of the spells in Little Fat Kid's Magic Shoppe.

Due to the limitations of the maximum slots, here's a suggested configuration:

  • 0_3_4_5_6_9_10_11_12_15_16_17_18_21_22_23_26_27_28_32_33_34_35_36_37_38_39_40_41_42_43_44_45_46_47_48_49_50_51_52_53
    • This set excludes all level I and II spells, as well as level III healing spell.

The inv1 – inv12 slots are reserved for the items currently equipped by the player, save for a couple of unused slots, while inv13 – inv30 are the 18 inventory slots.

Notes[]

  • Level required is based on the minimum level of a dagger (weakest level 1 item) with that enchantment, and doesn't scale linearly for other items (even with other level 1 items) or when there are two enchantments.
  • High rare enchanted means the enchantment changes the item's appearance to that of a higher-rarity ones.
  • High legendary means the enchantment adds a glow effect similar to artifact rarity items.
  • Some of the related enchantments have inconsistencies with their effects.
    • Enchantments 41-50 have the same effects as 31-40 (increase in intellect), except for enchantment 37 (Lapis) and 47 (Elusive), in which it is an increase in charisma instead.
      • Based on the names, it appears that these enchantments were supposed to be agility enchantments, but were incorrectly assigned intellect and charisma enchantments instead. This is confirmed by the fact that the agility stat is the only character stat that doesn't have its own enchantments, while others (strength, vitality, charisma and intellect) do.
    • Grieving (ID 87) increases necromancy mastery and agility, while Haunted (ID 88) increases necromancy and intellect.
    • Fire (ID 217) was supposed to give +5 fire damage for weapons, but instead gives fire resist effects similar to when it's applied on armors.
  • Colors can also be inconsistent. Some examples are:
    • Shredmaster gives the weapon a blue color, while May's gives it a red one, despite both of them being related (increase in shred and intellect)
    • Gilded gives a white color, while Silas' gives it a red one, and both are also related (increase in people's champion and charisma).
    • Defender's and Unflinching give an opaque white color, while Mirrored gives a transparent white. All increase parry chance and agility.

Stores the weapon or armor to be displayed. Changing this to certain values allows you to get weapons or armors that can only be used by Arena Champions.

This value is in floating point format, and has an extremely high limit of approximately ±1.8 × 10308, which is the 1024-bit limit. Upon reaching this limit, the value will roll over to either infinity or negative infinity.

Positive values for "good" alignments, negative values for "evil" alignments, and zero for no alignment.

Alignment will increase the rarity and minimum level required for the item. Setting this value to exceedingly high values will cause the item to have an artifact rarity, even if it has no enchantments.

Advanced modifications[]

WARNING: These modifications may corrupt your save file. Back up your current save file first before proceeding.

These require DB Browser for SQLite.

Get 20 inventory slots[]

This allows you to store up to 20 items in the inventory's backpack instead of the regular 18.

  1. Set the "max_items" field to 32.
  2. Replace the "date" and "foozle" fields with any item you desire.

How this works is if you set "max_items" to something greater than 30, the game will treat the fields beyond inv30 as items (date, foozle, next_boss, or custom fields added to the save file). In other words, it's reading data it wasn't supposed to read (out-of-range). We can't use the "next_boss" field because otherwise it will break the player's chapter progression (becomes NaN), so we can only use the "date" and "foozle" fields, which don't seem to cause any adverse effects to the game.

Also, we can't just add new fields, name them "inv31" and "inv32," and move them so they're placed after "inv30," because the game doesn't seem to care about the name of the fields and will treat them as if they were "date" and "foozle" fields, and "date" would then be treated as "next_boss," which will break the chapter progression again as it treats the value as NaN (i.e. the name doesn't matter; the orders do).

Get 29 inventory slots[]

This is a more dangerous modification because there's a chance the game will overwrite the "next_boss" field with an inventory data, breaking chapter progression.

  1. Set the "max_items" field to 42.
  2. On the "Database Structure" tab, expand the "Tables" selection (if it hasn't been expanded already), click on "gladiator_list" then click on "Modify Table."
  3. Click on "Add field." Repeat until it adds Field63. You don't need to rename these fields. Then click OK.
  4. Go back to "Browse Data," replace the "date," "foozle," and the newly-generated fields with any item you desire. Do not replace the "next_boss" field.
  5. Load the game and you should see there are now 29 items in your inventory. There will be a missing slot, and that is our "next_boss" slot. You don't want to fill that in because bad things will happen if you do.

Why don't we go beyond 29? It's because anything beyond the 29th item will be off-screen, and you won't be able to select them. 29 is fine because while the items might be outside the "inventory box," at least they're not off-screen.
